Company ProfileAboriginal TitleWithin the context of Platinex's Corporate Policy Statements, the following article, linked here with the permission of the author, Keith Clark of Lang Michener LLP, is helpful in understanding much of the confusion surrounding Aboriginal Title in Canada, along with the relationships between First Nations Communities and Exploration Companies operating on Crown Land. The rights of First Nation Communities are clear. Reasonable consultation ensures that appropriate measures are adopted by Exploration Companies to address any issues that might arise. For example, such issues might include compensation for disruption to hunting, trapping or fishing activities. Similarly the rights of Exploration Companies are clear. In addition, there is an obligation placed upon Exploration Companies by regulators and shareholders to operate in a cost effective and timely manner. Platinex always seeks to consult with local communities, First Nation or not, prior to exploration activities taking place. Provided that a community demonstrates willingness to consult in good faith, Platinex goes beyond consultation, wherever possible, to build working relationships that genuinely contribute to sustainable economic development in the community. This is particularly important in more remote locations, where unemployment and limited resources are frequent problems within communities. Most community leaders recognize the enormous potential for benefits that can accrue from collaboration, and Platinex continues to adopt this approach. |
